Cities, Forts, and Palaces
A few more photos of our journey so far.

The second night in India we ate at Three Stories, a fancy new restaurant in South Delhi with a great dance floor

Eliot at Three Stories

The next day we ventured to Old Delhi and explored the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, and Chandni Chowk. This area gained prominence during the Mughal era in India, and particularly during the reign of Shah Jahan, the same ruler who built the Taj Mahal. Here Peter explains a few of the basics of Islam to the group at Jama Masjid

Looking out from the top of one of the towers in Jama Masjid. Jama Masjid is the largest mosque in India, and also one of the largest in Asia.

From Delhi we headed south to Agra, Bharatpur, and Fatehpur Sikri. The latter was built by Akbar the Great, the third Mughal Emperor, in dedication to a Sufi saint who predicted he would have a son. Haley and Margie are in one of the doorways in Fatehpur Sikri.

After Bharatpur and Fatehpur Sikri, we headed to Jaipur. In north Jaipur, the City Palace is near the heart of the "Pink City", an old walled city that was painted pink in 1853 to welcome the visiting Prince of Wales.

In one of our first field trips, Sanjeev Ji (the husband of our Shivani Ji, our local coordinator) accompanied us to a hand-made paper factory and also to a block printing factory. Here he talks about one of the finished products.

thanks Kai for the explanations and pics with the group in it. All the pics have been fabulous - what beautiful sights and buildings and people! Great fun to see the team members in many of the pics! Hindi, yoga, and sitar lessons have all sounded wonderful and next I assume we'll see pics of the holi celebration? Beautiful colors! as we are also in white here in Alaska (but some fresh snow is nice for the X-country skiing!) Take care, Ann (Jeremy's mom)

Great to see these images and captions. Thanks, Kai.
We're eager to hear about Independent Study Projects and the daily routine so far in Jaipur.
Here in NYC it is all snow.
